Clash of Memories: 75 years after the end of World War II in Europe

A short film “Clash of Memories: 75 years after the end of World War II in Europe” (9:26 min) was released on 7 May 2020 on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the end World War II in Europe. It was filmed at three World War II memorial sites: the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe in Berlin, the Westerplatte peninsula in Gdańsk, and the Victory Museum in Moscow. The main aim was to show how differently World War II is commemorated in different countries. This war remains one of the most painful and conflicting episodes in the memories of the European nations.

Teachers and educators may use this film to provide a basis for discussions in the classrooms, as part of a body of materials designed to expand both teachers’ and students’ awareness of the fact that the ‘official’ presentation of World War II can differ significantly from one country to another.
